UPDATE: 'Illegal' Install May KO Grimaldi's Move

The Buildings Department yesterday put the kibosh on plans by the world-famous pizzeria to move into a larger space next door after learning that its operators quietly installed a coal-fired brick oven at the new site without approval.

Grimaldi’s wants to keep up with a new pizza joint heading to its current space at 19 Old Fulton Street in DUMBO, which will be run by pizza king Patsy Grimaldi.

As the Post reported Friday, the 80-year-old pizza legend is coming out of retirement to take over his old coal-fired cooker and the rest of the soon-to-be vacant Grimaldi’s space. The door was left open after landlord Mark Waxman opted to boot Frank Ciolli — who bought the tourist hotspot from Grimaldi in 1998 — once Ciolli’s lease expires at month’s end over a bitter rent dispute. First Di Fara’s is shuttered by the DOH…and now this…

One of the city’s most famous pizzerias is being tossed out of its building — and adding injury to insult, the rival establishment that’s moving in is inheriting its unique oven.

Brooklyn’s Grimaldi’s Pizzeria will move its world-famous tourist hot spot on Old Fulton Street in DUMBO to a larger site next door as early as Nov. 29 because its landlord declined to dish out a new lease.

But staying behind is one of its biggest attractions — a coal-fired brick oven that will soon be churning out pies for a competing pizza joint. (read more at NYPost.com)

DOH! Di Fara Shuttered by the DOH!
Perpetual “best-of” list-topper and cultishly loved Midwood institution Di Fara pizzeria has been shuttered after racking up a not-so-delicious 67 violation points by the Department of Health.  Even so, something tells us this little setback won’t do much to shorten the equally-legendary wait time once the shop opens back up.

Two Boots US Open Special: The Martina

To commemorate the U.S. Open being in town, and to celebrate tennis great Martina Navratilova, Two Boots has created a special pie for the next two weeks, with all proceeds going to the Harvey Milk High School, an amazing New York City public school dedicated to serving the gay, lesbian and transgender communities. The pie, available from August 29th through September 11th, is loaded with artichokes, red onions and sun-dried tomatoes.  Click here to find a Two Boots near you. (via EV Grieve)

Amazing!  There’s no way we’d be able to try them all.  But we do see opportunity for someone to open a pizza joint at the very tip of Manhattan.

The New “In” Spot in NYC
In addition to great pizza, a cool vibe, and sensational cocktails, this Nolita Italian restaurant, according to Eater.com has a drop-dead gorgeous staff. The menu at Rubirosa consists of Italian classics including a wide array of house-made pastas as well as its flagship thin-crust pizza dating back to a 50 year old family recipe. But first, you have to belly up to the bar and enjoy one of their Italian-inspired cocktails. Tasting Table recommends an Amaretto Sour (it’s nothing like the ones you drank in college), an updated spin on a Black Manhattan or a Porfiro Flip.  We all of a sudden have a craving for Pizza and Cocktails.

NYC's Best Joints To BYOB

Restaurants that offer BYOB are a great way to save some cash and still have a boozy good time. One of our favorites is definitely Panna II, with the crazy lights and if it’s your birthday, the insane song they’ll sing to you.  Check out this slideshow of BYOB restaurants put together by Gothamist.

Di Fara Taking Pizza Orders via Facebook

We salivate over the pizza at Di Fara’s and don’t mind waiting an hour to dive into their delicious pie.  Now, in a stroke of genius, Margy De Marco Miles, the daughter of owner and pizza chef Dom De Marco, will begin accepting orders through their Facebook page! Because she’s so busy running the busy pizza parlor, you should plan ahead and place your order in the morning or the night before. (via Slice)

Closed Monday & Tuesday!

UPDATE: Basically you can certainly try and place an order over Facebook, but unless you receive a confirmation message don’t expect to have a pie waiting for you. And as “there is only a certain time window per day in which the page is being looked at,” it really isn’t the most reliable process. SeamlessWeb, this is not. (via Gothamist)

Eat bad pizza but trick yourself into believing it’s good because it’s made in New York. Do the same thing with bagels and sex.

Dinner and a Movie at Nick & Toni’s Cafe

Each Monday, the tasty Mediterranean restaurant offers two courses plus an AMC movie ticket for only $28.  You can enjoy a nice meal then head around the corner to the AMC Loews Lincoln Square (Broadway and 68th) for a flick.  It’s a perfect money-saving date night idea, or a way to enjoy a night on the town with friends that won’t break the bank.
