The New Museum's Giant Slide (And More) Has Arrived!

New York, say hello to the your newest favorite attraction: Carsten Höller’s 102-foot-long slide at the New Museum. The giant plastic tube, which goes down from the museum’s fourth floor, through ceilings and floors, to the second floor is now fully operational and will be open to the public from tomorrow through January 15, 2012. And did we mention there is also a sensory deprivation tank? And upside down goggles? And a fish tank you rest your head in? Suddenly getting dragged to the museum seems more like dropping acid and reliving your childhood than a chance to better yourself. (via Gothamist)

matthewgallaway:

Check out this slide they’re installing in the New Museum. I seriously think that slides like this should be a requirement in every building in the world New York City. I think it would solve many problems related to ppl thinking they’re better than everyone else (“hey buddy — take the slide and then we’ll talk”) and also allow for a new WPA as buildings were retrofitted. I’m exaggerating here, obviously, but only a little. The only bad thing is that you’re going to have to wear a helmet and pads — at least on this one — which :(

Manhattan’s Quiet Shelters of Solitude Amid the Noise

Despite appearances, it’s a lesser known fact that New York City is chockablock with shelters of solitude, some hidden and some in plain sight, that invite pause, reflection, even wonder; somehow the noise heightens the silence. The New York Times counts down some of their favorites.

Peanut Island
Originally created in 1918 as a result of material excavated when the Lake Worth Inlet was created. Originally called Inlet Island, Peanut Island amounted to only ten acres. Today it measures over 80 acres and the park on the perimeter of the island is ideal for picnicking, boating, fishing, snorkeling and camping.  Walk the 230-foot boardwalk and admire the mangroves and the wildlife that call them home. You can also stay dry on the reef boardwalk, which extends 280-feet over the water and it the perfect place to say “Hi” to a manatee.  The island is also home to the the Palm Beach Maritime Museum, which houses JFK’s secret bunker, which is open to visitors as an example of Cold War-era concerns for the president’s safety.  The island is only accessible with your own boat or by private water taxi.

Crumb’s talent is hard to ignore. On Friday the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators will open their new exhibit, “R. Crumb: Lines Drawn on Paper,” which will run through April 30th and showcase numerous unpublished works by the prolific illustrator. (via Gothamist)
