Brooklyn's Ice Cream Social

We’ll admit it, we enjoy ice cream year round.  But it’s especially delicious when the temperatures are scorching - we don’t have to make excuses for how quickly we wolf it down!  We have our favorites (Van Leeuwen, Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, Louie G’s) but BrooklynBased has come up with a few suggestions that will expand our already heady ice cream knowledge and appreciation.

New York's New Doughnut Craze

It’s official…New York City is going through a Doughnut Revolution.  It might be that the cupcake craze is now morphing into a doughnut frenzy…we’re not complaining, as we love the sugary treat almost as much as Homer Simpson.  The NY Times has a great list of the city’s best doughnuts…and we’re set on trying them all.

Van Leeuwen in Boerum Hill

Every time we see a Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Truck, we’re compelled to get a scoop, or two.  Our favorite flavors are Hazelnut and Peppermint & Chip.  However, if you’re craving some of their sweet and creamy treats, and you live near Boerum Hill, you can now walk to their new ice cream parlor for your sugary fix.  They’ll also be serving Intelligentsia coffee and the house-made pastries from the Greenpoint spot.

Meet the New Kosciuszko Bridge

If you own a car in Brooklyn and have ventured out east, then you must know what a nightmare the current Kosciuszko Bridge is.  It’s antiquated, poorly paved and is constantly a bottle-necked disaster.  A replacement is long overdue and eagerly anticipated. Designs have been voted on by the community - a critical element in the state’s decision making process - and the winner is displayed above.  Unfortunately, the tentative completion date is sometime in 2017!

A Brooklyn Condo Blends Vintage and Modern

When work began several years ago on a 31-unit condominium at 100 Engert Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the interior appointments were designed to appeal to a wide range of buyers: stainless-steel appliances, granite counters and cherry wood cabinets.

But part way through, one of the project’s developers, Steven Hurwitz, a principal of GFI Development, scrapped the sleek finishes and asked designers to deliver the vintage industrial style popularized in Lower Manhattan neighborhoods like SoHo and TriBeCa. (Read more…)

The New Coffee Bars - Unplug, Drink Up

At times, the large back room at Café Grumpy in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, has so many customers typing and wearing noise-canceling headphones that it looks like an office without the cubicles. A second Café Grumpy location, in Chelsea, prohibited laptops after too many customers ran extension cords across the room. The ban still rankles with some in the blogosphere.

When Café Grumpy’s owners, Caroline Bell and Chris Timbrell, decided to open a third location, in Park Slope, last year, they built a solution to the laptop problem right into the design. The furniture consists of a counter in the back and a chest-high table in the front. A bench outside is for lingering.

Name aside, this Café Grumpy is not a cafe. It is, unmistakably, a coffee bar. (Read more…)
