A Bookstore and a Hub for Readers

Any bookstore can sell you a book. But if you’re looking for a bookstore where you can find a date who shares your literary tastes, see a magic show, join a basketball league and have a cartoonist scrawl a tattoo on you with a permanent marker, the field narrows a bit.

Specifically, it narrows to Word, a cheerful shop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, that not only stocks books but also strives to create a community of people who love them. (Read more at NY Times)

Here’s how to explore the place where everything’s happening before it’s happening. (via GQ)

$30 for 12 German Beers at 12 Bars

From 1870-1920, Brooklyn had nearly 50 German style breweries and a Brewer’s Row with 12 breweries in a 12 block area. Prohibition (1920-1933) came along and dealt a devastating blow, but we’re finally back. The Brewers Association recently announced there are now more breweries in the US than before Prohibition. To celebrate, BeerMenus decided to bring the rich tradition of German beer back to Brooklyn.

On Saturday June 25th and/or Sunday June 26th from Noon to 8pm, BeerMenus is hosting a German Beer pub crawl. The crawl features 12 bars with outdoor seating in Williamsburg/Greenpoint, a modern day Brewer’s Row if you will, and 12 German-style beers. Each bar will pour you a pint of one of the featured beers. Get your tickets now!
