On Sunday, the 7th Annual Vendy Awards brought together 22 street vendors from New York City and New Jersey for a day of food and competition on Governor’s Island. Solber Pupusas, a street cart dishing out traditional Salvadorian corn patties and other Latin specialties, won the event’s ultimate recognition of sidewalk talent, the Vendy Cup.

More than 100 vintage VW bugs, buses and other models will vie for fan-favorite awards in myriad categories at the NYC Volkswagen Traffic Jam.  Get bumper-to-bumper with Beetles, buses, dune buggies, Things, and other original and custom VDubs circa the 1950’s through the late 1970’s from NYC and beyond.  This free event takes place on Saturday, August 13th from 10am-4pm and is open to all. So whether you’re a casual spectator or a classic VW owner or enthusiast, come for a sweet summer day of vintage cars, picnicking on the lawn, events, music, and more! Remember, no punch backs!

Mark di Suvero at Governors Island

There’s no experience quite like wandering among the massive outdoor installations at Storm King Art Center, recognized as one of the world’s leading sculpture parks for fifty years. A Perfect New York City Memorial Day Weekend

We’re all looking forward to starting the long weekend, if you haven’t already.  It also looks like the weather gods are going to bless us with some summer-like weather!  If you’re not heading out of town and are looking for things to do, check out Time Out NY’s suggestions - including trips to Coney Island, Governors Island, Rockaway Beach and Central Park to see Lady Gaga (a show that happened VERY early this morning).

Governors Island Food Truck Fest

The first Parked, which took place on Memorial Day, drew over 3,000 hungry foodies to BKLYN Yard. This time around, even more trucks will be on hand including the Jamaican Dutchy Truck, Rickshaw Dumpling, Green Pirate, Joyride Truck, Red Hook Lobster Pound, Van Leeuwan Artisan Ice Cream, Halo Berlin, The Cinnamon Snail, Kelvin Natural Slush Co, Hermelinda Mexicana and many more!

The event is on Sunday, September 5th between noon and 5 p.m and admittance is free. Catch the free ferry to Governor’s Island at the Battery Maritime Building, which is adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry terminal.

Governors Island as Playground for the Arts

Increasingly over the last four years, from May to October — with visitors now riding hourly on weekend ferries from Brooklyn and Manhattan — Governors Island has been shaping a new culture of its own. Its participants include trapeze artists, bicyclists, conceptual artists, D.J.’s, musicians, dancers and dramatists, and its attractions range from views of the New York Harbor to a free miniature-golf course designed by an arts group, where fanciful stations allow players to take metaphorical potshots at a national missile defense shield or putt a ball in support of carbon-neutral footprints.
