As the owner of legendary hotspots like Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium and Club USA, Peter Gatien was the king of the New York club scene until years of legal battles led to his eventual deportation to Canada. This exuberant documentary charts Gatien’s rise and fall against the transformation of New York City, offering a wild ride through a now-closed chapter in the history of NYC nightlife. From Billy Corben, the director of Cocaine Cowboys, who will be in attendance during tonight’s 7:30pm screening.

In the hallways of a Brooklyn apartment building, a group of children spill out of their homes and play together. And though they come from diverse backgrounds, they see each other not as strangers, but as friends. Through the lens of some of our country’s youngest characters, Wyckoff Place offers a valuable lesson to us all about open-mindedness, diversity, and the power of childhood friendships. In the tradition of great fly-on-the-wall documentaries, the film deftly gains unprecedented access to the New York Times newsroom and the inner workings of the Media Desk. Grey Gardens is the unbelievable but true story of Mrs. Edith Bouvier Beale (a.k.a. “Big Edie”) and her daughter “Little Edie” who were the aunt and first cousin of Jackie O. They lived in their own world in a decaying 28-room East Hampton mansion known as “Grey Gardens,” a place so far gone that the local authorities threatened to evict them for violating building and sanitation codes. Their world was unknown until David and Albert Maysles arrived with their camera and tape recorder and explored this powerful, bittersweet, eccentric and complex relationship between mother and daughter.
The IFC Center is featuring a special screening of Grey Gardens with filmmakers Albert Maysles and Muffie Meyer. If you haven’t seen this amazing film, now’s your chance!
