Famous New Yorkers Dish on Their Favorite Spots in the City

Writer Jeryl Brunner asked hundreds of well-known New Yorkers to dish on their favorite places for her book, “My City, My New York: Famous New Yorkers Share Their Favorite Places.”

When she quizzed “Sex and the City” designer Patricia Field about her favorite spot in New York City, she assumed it would be a trendy nightclub or stylish eatery in the East Village.

Not so.

The flamboyant costumer picked the downtown Pathmark supermarket off the FDR Drive.

“She loves it because she can park her car there, just like she could if she lived in the suburbs,” says Brunner. “And, since it’s in a diverse neighborhood, it sells lots of different types of ethnic foods.” (read more at NY Daily News)

Splitscreen: A Love Story

Some people love Paris and some New York.  Others can’t decide between either.  But what if you could have them both?  This amazing video share the love of both cities, was entirely on the Nokia N8 mobile phone and was the winner of the Nokia Shorts competition 2011. (video by JW Griffiths)

One Downside to Bicycle Commuting: Biker's Lung!

If you bike to work, you’ve probably got pretty nice thighs. Your lungs, though, may not be in such great shape. New research has found that bicycle commuters inhale more than twice the amount of black carbon particles as pedestrians making a comparable trip. That healthy bike ride to and from work might be getting you out of a car, but it’s not getting you out of the way of the automobile emissions. (via The Atlantic Cities)

Amber Jones is the author of ‘New York, Phew York’, a scratch and sniff book that captures the smells of New York City. The book follows a family’s trip through 19 neighborhoods in the city, capturing 30 smells including hot dogs, the sewer and fish. It’s an assault on the olfactory senses that was inspired by Jones’ own experiences in the Big Apple.

Paris Versus New York

Bagel or baguette? J.F.K. or C.D.G.? Pigeons or rats? These abiding questions are the central conceit of Paris Versus New York: A Tally of Two Cities, the Web site by the Parisian graphic designer Vahram Muratyan. With color-block graphics and razor-sharp wit, Muratyan presents the iconography of each city in dueling juxtaposition that becomes a running commentary on transcontinental difference. Turn Gardening On Its Head

Instead of occupying precious counter space, these ceramic planters hang from the ceiling, a clever design for contemporary living.

Cool, you say, but how do you not end up with plant guts splattered all over the floor? We wondered the same thing. The solution is simple but ingenious: Remove ready-grown plant from its container and place into Sky Planter. Once locked in place with the circular ceramic disk, flip the pot and suspend from a securely fastened ceiling hook. Voilé! An upside down plant.
