What’s a celebrity to do with all that money? Buy a piece of pricey New York City real estate—and then hire architects and interior designers to turn it into something completely different! Renovations are practically a requirement of the celebrity purchase these days, but not all celebrity renovations are created (or redone) equal. Curbed spent some time in the archives to find the city’s 10 best celebrity renovations.

is rising, and the 9/11 Memorial will open right below it next month on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Although progress on the World Trade Center site has been slow, the surrounding neighborhoods did not wait to revive (and in some cases reinvent themselves) after all the emotional and economic devastation. The financial district is bustling, Chinatown is as quirky and enticing as ever, and TriBeCa is bursting with new restaurants, bars and hotels. With the exception of those seeking a night of relentless club-hopping, travelers hardly need venture north of Canal Street for a complete New York weekend. (read more at NYTimes.com)

At the north end of Battery Park City down below the new Liberty Twins, where ice rinks and ball fields have been usurped by a couple of acres of raw dirt, a new fun spot is going in: The Digital Wall Pavilion! This 550-foot arc of fritted glass fronting the amenity-filled BPC Community Center, aka the DWiP, is from the creative minds at hanrahan Meyers architects. Aiming for LEED Platinum certification, the design is all about water and sustainability and the idea is made musical by composer Michael Schumacher. A bar code etched into the glass, activated by smart-phoning passers-by, will let them play the wall. Holy Digitization! (via Curbed)

Despite appearances, it’s a lesser known fact that New York City is chockablock with shelters of solitude, some hidden and some in plain sight, that invite pause, reflection, even wonder; somehow the noise heightens the silence. The New York Times counts down some of their favorites.

Mayor Bloomberg and Randall Stephenson, the chairman and CEO of AT&T announced today that 20 parks throughout the five boroughs will all be getting free public Wi-Fi! The USS New York Arrives in New York Harbor!
The USS New York (LPD-21) is one of the U.S. Navy’s fleet of San Antonio-class LPD (Landing Platform Dock) warships. The New York is also the seventh ship to be named after the state of New York. She has a crew of 360, and can also carry up to 700 Marines. Most notably, she was constructed with steel that was salvaged from the World Trade Center after it was destroyed in the September 11 attacks.
It’ll be open for tours at Pier 88 (48th Street and the West Side Highway) starting tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. This is the first time the boat has been back to New York since it was commissioned in 2009.

We see almost everything imaginable when exploring the streets of New York City. But a Whale sighting from the top of the Statue of Liberty is even beyond our wild imagination. Yet, that’s just what scientists at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology are saying is possible - there is documentation of some whales cruising as close as 10 miles from NYC. How many of the 91 movies depicted here can you name?

It’s time for one of the biggest races in New York City! This year’s half marathon (13.1 miles) starts bright and early on Sunday morning (just in time for the official springtime kick-off) and does a clockwise loop of Central Park, before heading down 7th Avenue through Times Square, and taking the home stretch down the West Side Highway and finishing at Chambers Street. While entry to the race closed a few months ago, you can come cheer on the runners (including yours truly) and give them some much needed encouragement. You can also enjoy live music and entertainment all along the route. Good luck everyone!
