Small Box NYC

For some people, Thanksgiving is about family, food and waking up before the sun rises to take advantage of Black Friday deals at the Big Box stores.  We’ll skip that lil’ bit of insanity as we’re big fans of the Small Box, Mom & Pop stores that are still everywhere in NYC!  Instead, rest up on Friday and wake up early on Saturday for Small Business Saturday - we think it’s a good idea all year long to support your local businesses!  We all have our favorite shops, and MUG has put together a list of their faves - check out the comments section on their blog for further suggestions!

A Bookstore and a Hub for Readers

Any bookstore can sell you a book. But if you’re looking for a bookstore where you can find a date who shares your literary tastes, see a magic show, join a basketball league and have a cartoonist scrawl a tattoo on you with a permanent marker, the field narrows a bit.

Specifically, it narrows to Word, a cheerful shop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, that not only stocks books but also strives to create a community of people who love them. (Read more at NY Times)

Once a mainstay of the Tin Pan Alley music scene, Colony is now the last man standing, and it shows. The creaky drawers and scarred slide-top cases of CDs; rows of faded, autographed celebrity head-shots; and bins of retro concert posters are all hallmarks of a business that still has one foot squarely in the past. Just like back then, the mainstay of the store is sheet music; scores and fake books take up the majority of the space, covering everything from Broadway shows to be-bop. There are also racks of showtune/soundtrack CDs, contemporary rock and reggae albums, and boxed-sets of classic vocalists like Bing Crosby and Sinatra. If you can’t find what you’re looking for among the substantial inventory, take heart—the motto of the “musicologist” staff is, “You hum the tune, we tell you the title.” (text via NYMag)

The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Store

Brooklyn’s Superhero Supply company is often mistaken for a hardware store, but actually houses shelves of fun things like cans of Courage, Gumption, invisibility paint, and tools to help you scale walls. A mock seriousness to the store, paired with the Willy Wonka-like fantasy world, creates a delightful place to explore and play.

A Unique Thrift Store in Brooklyn

It looks small on the outside, but inside the Unique Thrift Store at 408 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn lies a large expanse of used clothing, books, gifts, knick-knacks and jewelry. While the stuff may be second hand, the feel is more like a department store than a thrift shop. It’s bright and well organized. (Via McBrooklyn)
