The Diabolical Diagram of Movie Monsters

With Halloween just a few days away, here’s a breakdown of all manner of frightful creatures from the silver screen, from the very large (like Godzilla) to the rather small (like Chucky) to the very weird (like the Crawling Eye). Hundreds in all, this is the definitive guide to a universe of scarifying baddies. (via Laughing Squid)

The New Museum's Giant Slide (And More) Has Arrived!

New York, say hello to the your newest favorite attraction: Carsten Höller’s 102-foot-long slide at the New Museum. The giant plastic tube, which goes down from the museum’s fourth floor, through ceilings and floors, to the second floor is now fully operational and will be open to the public from tomorrow through January 15, 2012. And did we mention there is also a sensory deprivation tank? And upside down goggles? And a fish tank you rest your head in? Suddenly getting dragged to the museum seems more like dropping acid and reliving your childhood than a chance to better yourself. (via Gothamist)

Z O M B I E C O N N Y C

They’re attacking! Zombiecon NYC is a loosely organized group of bloodthirsty zombies who gather once a year to attack NYC in a theatrical, absurdist parody of blind consumerism and brainless politics.  You’ll see them at city landmarks all day and night, stopping frequently for brains and beers. Say “Hi” to the nice zombie if you see one but make sure they aren’t hungry for BRAINS!

We try to use the stairs as often as possible, but this would just brighten up any day.

Getting people to use the stairs over an escalator.

We believe that the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better is by making it fun to do. We call it The fun theory.

Opening Soon: Timeshare Backyard

If you, like us, have spent many summer days longing for the space afforded by massive suburban lawns, we have good news! Beginning next week, a pop-up backyard will bring the experience of hanging out in your parents’ backyard to a lot on the Lower East Side. The Timeshare Backyard is a private space that will be available to rent for a flate rate of $50 per hour, for up to eight hours.

Those who rent out the space can also request a variety of fun add-ons for an additional flat fee, including water balloons ($5) and a Slip ‘n Slide ($100). Tack on a grill ($50), a pack of hamburgers and hot dogs from Brooklyn’s Meat Hook ($100 for ten people), and a keg ($150), and you’ve got yourself a party. The space opens on August 11, and will be available until the end of August. (via TimeOut NY)

Mini Golf at Pier 25

Mini Golf is a quintessential, warm weather activity that we look forward to every year - usually when we’re out visiting the Jersey Shore.  However, NYC now has their own putt-putt course.  Recently opened in May, this 13,000-square-foot, 18-hole course is relatively easy, inexpensive and accessible. The holes have some cute features, like the one where your ball ends up in a stream, and floats back to the green. Wanna look like a pro, then watch Chelsea Piers’ golf pro and all-around cool dude Josh Meyers tell you how to take down the course and read his hole-by-hole tips. (via Thrillist)

MyBlockNYC.com is a new interactive mapping website that captures and presents personal video accounts of the life and culture of New York City in order to create an intimate, evolving, and complete portrait of this great city. Share the moments you see on the wild streets of New York City by uploading videos you already have on your cell phone or computer, or explore the city and capture what you see. Each video should be shot outdoors and take place on a single block.

This Pool Would Be a Real Plus

Kickstarter sure has some weird projects seeking your patronage, but one of the cleverest is ‘+ Pool’, a public swimming pool literally floating in the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan. It could also be moved to the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey, or parked off Ellis Island. Rad! (read more at Brooklyn Paper)

The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Store

Brooklyn’s Superhero Supply company is often mistaken for a hardware store, but actually houses shelves of fun things like cans of Courage, Gumption, invisibility paint, and tools to help you scale walls. A mock seriousness to the store, paired with the Willy Wonka-like fantasy world, creates a delightful place to explore and play.

10 Things to Do with Peeps

Name any food out there, and it can probably be Peepsified. That doesn’t mean it should, but it always makes for an entertaining afternoon. In our experience, it’s worth it if only for the reaction from people who witness the Peepsperimentation. They either have a really large grin on their faces, or a look of horror. Seriouseats.com compiled the best from Peeps Week 2009 and 2010 as they prepare for Peeps Week 2011!
